I’d argue that many of the unwritten rules for design (you know, flush left, ragged right, 8/11, and so on) become obsolete when designing for fashion, which is why I’m always a little jealous when I see a portfolio filled with work like that of U.K. firm DesignUnit. In particular, I’m digging the layouts for Dansk magazine. Sure, the photography is great, and there are plenty of pages to allow for tons of white space. But, because fashion can be frivolous, so can the design. Take a look at the asymmetrical layouts, the playfulness with the justified columns of text, the imagery butting right against the typography! DesignUnit is a master of design for design’s sake. I love that.
